Whenever we traveled, especially when our destination was reached after dark, this simple, yet satisfying meal was the first order of business. After a long day of driving no one wants to cook anything complicated.
Sometimes, even here at home, there just isn’t the time or the inclination for anything more complicated. There’s nothing fancy about this dish — just simple goodness.
Two ingredients plus a can opener and a spoon is all you need. Yes, the can itself can serve as its own cookpot and serving bowl — just heat it very slowly so it doesn’t boil over. Nothing could be easier.
Years ago, our favorite canned beef stew was Dinty Moore, but over time, we found other brands to be superior in quality and taste. It’s possible there is only one beef stew factory and all brands draw from that one source, but with the noticeable difference in taste, I suspect each company has their own kitchens and their own recipes. As for the bread, anything will do, and it’s a lot more civilized to clean your bowl with bread than with your tongue. After all, when arriving late, or just exhausted from the day, your priorities are rather simple: grab something to eat and hit the sack. Tomorrow is another day.
To extend the stew, simply drain a can of cut green beans and add it to the pot. Tossing in a beef bullion cube will enhance the “beefy flavor.”
