This simple dish has only two ingredients but has been a cold weather staple at our dinner table for generations. The original recipe called for stale bread as the thickener. I never liked it, so when I wrote my first cookbook, I replaced the bread with crushed saltine crackers. In my opinion, the alteration greatly improved what was once a decidedly mediocre dish. You might wonder about the stale bread; did I throw it out? To find out what I normally do with stale bread, Click here for recipe.
There has never been anything elegant about this dish, yet it remains a comforting, heart-warming addition to any meat-based meal.
